Lakewood High School students take to social media to protest dress code

LAKEWOOD, Ohio – “Tops and bottoms must overlap at all times, including when arms are raised,” states the Lakewood High School dress code.
So when a girl’s back was exposed Tuesday, the second day of a new school year, she was given a shirt to cover up. And classmates took to social media to protest the code, which also bans hoodies and athletic pants.
School district spokeswoman Christine Gordillo said the girl was sent to the principal’s office for “what was deemed inappropriate attire at school.”
“Someone noticed her back was exposed, so she was asked to change shirts,” Gordillo said.
Gordillo said it is not uncommon for students to be asked to change clothes. Occasionally a student is sent home, but the high school office keeps a supply of clothes on-hand for instances where a student needs to change.
